Shopify has released its Fall ’26 Edition, and the theme this time is “Exponential”, built around growth that does not follow a straight line. The release page is organized into eleven sections, from Agentic and Sidekick to Payments, Fulfillment and Developer, and it lists a very long run of updates.
The short version: AI agents are becoming a real place to sell, Sidekick is turning from an advisor into a teammate that does the work, and the plumbing underneath (checkout, fraud protection, shipping and app billing) keeps getting deeper. Shopify frames it with three numbers: more than 1 billion products in its catalog that can be discovered across AI channels, more than 400 million shoppers with Shop Pay accounts, and more than 12,000 high-risk payments stopped every minute on Shopify Payments.
We build apps for Shopify stores, so we went through the full list. Here is what stands out, first for merchants and then for app builders.
What Shopify announced
1. Your products can be sold inside AI agents
Agentic is the biggest theme of the release. Shopify launched a Shop skill that lets ChatGPT, Claude and other agents help shoppers find products, get recommendations and check out with Shop Pay. Shop Pay also works as a wallet inside agents, so shoppers can buy from any brand, on or off Shopify, through Claude Duet, Grok Bot and Instinct.
Agentic Storefronts now reaches Google as well. You can sell in Google Search, including AI Mode, and in the Gemini app, with checkout powered by Shopify and orders managed in your admin as usual. Shopify Catalog now passes your compare-at price to shopping agents, so markdowns show up with no extra setup, and the admin tells you whether your store is eligible for Catalog and what to fix if it is not.
The other direction is covered too. You can connect a store to Grok, Gemini, Meta’s Muse or Microsoft Copilot and manage products, orders and inventory from there, pin Shopify to the ChatGPT sidebar, design with Canvas inside agents, turn a digital file into a product by handing it to an agent, and even describe what you want to sell in ChatGPT or Claude and import products from other sellers through Shopify Collective.
2. Sidekick moves from suggestions to execution
Shopify says daily Sidekick sessions have grown 4.2x year over year, and the new version shows why. Sidekick now handles complex workflows, stages several changes at once, writes code and researches the web. You approve a plan once and it applies the changes, for example rewriting descriptions across every product in a collection.
Its recommendations are now tested with SimGym before you choose which ones to apply, and the guidance it gives takes the apps in your stack and research on your market into account. Sidekick sits in a floating prompt across the redesigned admin, can create and edit draft orders, set up print-on-demand products, answer pricing questions using Shopify Smart Pricing models, explain payouts and chargebacks, and help build checkout customizations with Checkout Blocks.
3. A new way to design and launch your storefront
Canvas lets you design the entire store in one view with Sidekick’s help, and Shopify says going from no theme to a launched store is 20% faster. Rollouts lets you bundle a theme, checkout configuration, catalogs and discounts into one scheduled launch, event or experiment, and it now covers more channels.
The storefront agent in Shopify Inbox can recommend products and start checkout from the chat, and Shopify reports that customers signed in with Shop convert up to 1.5x higher in Inbox chats. Shop sign-in is also open to stores that are not on Shopify, and online stores now support right-to-left languages.
4. Payments, fraud protection and checkout
Shopify Protect is the main payments story. It blocks high-risk orders before payment, extends chargeback coverage, gathers evidence automatically for unauthorized-charge disputes, attaches proof of delivery, writes a dispute response for each bank and lets you set custom fraud rules. Shopify Tax gets a managed mode, and Shopify Managed Markets offers all-in pricing with flat-rate shipping, where brands saw 50% higher international conversion.
Checkout also gets smaller upgrades: HSA and FSA payments in Shop Pay, Shop Pay Installments in Australia, Apple Pay in any browser and custom fields in the checkout and accounts editor.
5. Retail, marketing and fulfillment
On the retail side, Shopify says a known in-store customer has over 60% higher lifetime value than an unknown one, and POS now recognizes more of them, with fewer taps for cash and split payments, online carts available at the till, scheduled stock counts and more local payment methods.
Marketing adds a TikTok ads channel, a ChatGPT Ads app, WhatsApp consent at checkout, WhatsApp automations and a ready-made Black Friday Cyber Monday campaign in Shopify Messaging. Shop Campaigns expands to over 35 new markets and has led to over 18M sales.
For fulfillment, eligibility for Shop Promise grew 20x, DHL Express reaches the UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain, shipping labels arrive for the Netherlands and Poland, and return rules can now differ by market.
What this means for merchants
The practical takeaway is that product data quality now affects sales directly, because AI agents can only recommend what they can read clearly. With Black Friday Cyber Monday close, these five steps are worth doing first:
- Check your Catalog eligibility. The admin now shows whether your store qualifies for Shopify Catalog and what to change if it does not.
- Review the business details shared with agents. You can approve the facts that AI channels see, including policies and FAQs, and Shopify suggests how to improve them. Clear shipping and return policies help agents answer shopper questions correctly.
- Hand repetitive work to Sidekick. Bulk description edits, draft orders and pricing checks are good first jobs, since you approve the plan once and it does the rest.
- Look at fraud and chargebacks before the rush. Review Shopify Protect, the new risk information on orders and the risk metrics in analytics.
- Revisit your market and shipping setup. If you sell abroad, look at Managed Markets, shipping profiles and return rules per market.
One caution: not everything is live for everyone. The release page marks several items as early access, beta, coming soon or rolling out, and availability can depend on your plan, country and store, so check your admin before you plan around a feature.
What this means for app developers and partners
For people who build on Shopify, Fall ’26 changes how apps reach shoppers, how they earn and what they must fix to stay listed.
New ways to reach shoppers
- One MCP for shopping. Developers can add Shop sign-in, product search across Shopify Catalog and Shop Pay checkout to any agent or app, for brands on or off Shopify.
- WebMCP tools. Online stores can register structured tools that let agents discover products, create carts and guide shoppers through checkout.
- Catalog API. It can now search products from businesses not on Shopify (beta). Early access also lets you earn the commission a business sets in Shop Campaigns, plus 0.3% from Shopify, on every sale you drive.
- Universal Commerce Protocol. A /buy endpoint creates cart and checkout permalinks, and an /ask endpoint answers store questions using facts the business has published.
New ways to earn and bill
- Partners earn from subscription revenue and online GMV for every business they bring to Shopify, on all plans, for four years.
- The cap on private plans is gone, so you can create as many as you need in Shopify App Pricing and add any number of stores to each.
- Plans can require specific store capabilities, prices show as local estimates in listings and charge approvals, and annual plans with monthly usage charges are coming soon.
- A built-in tool moves existing subscriptions from the Billing API to Shopify App Pricing, and an app add-on can now be attached to a Theme Store listing.
Housekeeping that needs action
- Apps can no longer create or update script tags and must move to theme app extensions or web pixels.
- Apps must migrate to expiring access tokens before January 2027 to stay listed on the Shopify App Store. Client credentials let you request tokens yourself.
- App names must be unique and recognizable, and App Store reviews are now checked against shop trust, identity and app activity.
- You can restrict API calls to specific IP addresses per app, and the AI Toolkit can scan your app for vulnerabilities from a single prompt.
Better tooling
The Dev Dashboard is redesigned with billing and payouts in the same place, and listing submission, pricing and app ads are coming to it. Shopify CLI now works well with agents, including dev store commands, and a Stripe Projects CLI command can create a store, account and plan in one step.
If your app still relies on script tags or the Billing API, put those two at the top of your roadmap.
The bottom line
Fall ’26 is about making a store work in more places with less manual effort: agents bring shoppers in, Sidekick takes over the busywork, and the checkout, fraud and shipping tools remove friction behind the scenes. For merchants, the first job is clean product data and clear policies. For app builders, it is clearing the script tag, token and billing changes while the new revenue model and agent APIs open room to grow.
